School name tags in bulk: quoting, printing and delivering a class order

Bulk orders are where a small printing business starts to feel like a real one. A single class needs a tag for every child, and schools buy again every term. The work is different from single gifts, so it pays to have a process.

Who buys in bulk

  • Class teachers and parents' groups for bag tags, often at the start of term.
  • Schools for events, sports days and house badges.
  • Offices for desk name plates when a team moves or grows.
  • Event organisers for name tags and favours.

One happy teacher usually tells the next one.

Quote with a simple table

Bulk buyers want one number. Give them a short table with a price per piece at a few quantities, plus a minimum order. Keep it simple enough to fit in a message. See How to price personalised 3D prints for how to work out the per-piece price.

Collect names in one list

The biggest risk in a class order is a misspelled name. Do not accept names spread across thirty messages. Ask for one list, one name per line, exactly as it should be printed. A shared spreadsheet or a single message from the teacher both work.

Then send back a picture of two or three tags from the list (the longest name and the shortest) so the buyer can see how they will look.

Turn the list into files in one go

Typing thirty names one at a time is where mistakes creep in. With the STLmint Seller plan, open the design, choose Bulk order and paste the list. You get a ZIP with one print-ready file per name, each named after the person, ready to load onto the printer.

Print in full beds

Arrange as many tags as fit on your bed and print them together. Keep the files in the order of the list so packing is easy. Check each tag against the list as it comes off the printer.

Pack and label for the buyer

Bag or bundle each tag in list order and label the bundle with the class name. A teacher who can hand out thirty tags in two minutes will order from you again.

Plan for the next term

Note the date of every school order. A message a few weeks before the next term starts ("Same again for the new class?") is the easiest sale you will ever make.
