How to start selling personalised 3D printed keychains

A name keychain is the easiest personalised product to sell. It is small, cheap to post, quick to print, and almost everyone knows someone it would suit. If you already own a 3D printer, you are most of the way to a small business. What usually stops people is the design work: every order has a different name, and redrawing a file for each one does not scale.

This guide walks through starting without that bottleneck.

Pick three products, not thirty

New sellers often list everything they can print. Buyers scroll past a wall of options. Start with three products that cover different occasions:

  • A name keychain for gifts, birthdays and party favours.
  • A school or bag tag for parents, which sells in bulk at the start of every term.
  • A desk name plate for offices, teachers and new jobs.

Three products are enough to learn what your customers actually ask for. You can add more once orders tell you where the demand is.

Make the order process boring

The best custom-order process is one where the customer gives you a name and a colour, and nothing else needs discussing. Write a short order template and pin it everywhere you sell:

  1. Name or text (exactly as it should appear)
  2. Lettering style (show two or three options as pictures)
  3. Colours
  4. Delivery address or pickup

Every extra question you answer by message costs you time you are not paid for.

Send a picture before you print

Misspelled names are the most common reason a personalised order goes wrong. Before printing, send the customer a picture of their exact design and ask them to reply "approved". It takes a minute and protects you from reprints.

In STLmint, the picture in the studio is drawn from the same file you download, so what the customer approves is what comes off the printer. Save it with Save picture and send it straight from your phone.

Price for your time, not just the filament

Filament is the smallest part of the cost of a keychain. Your time taking the order, printing, checking, packing and posting is the real cost. We cover a simple pricing method in How to price personalised 3D prints.

Choose one channel and get good at it

You do not need a website on day one. Pick the channel where your buyers already are:

  • Instagram and WhatsApp for local and gift buyers. Post short videos of prints coming off the bed.
  • Etsy or Amazon Handmade for buyers searching for "custom name keychain".
  • Markets and craft fairs where people can watch you print their name on the spot.
  • Schools, offices and event organisers for bulk orders.

Once one channel brings steady orders, add the next.

Keep a sample board

Print every design in your two best-selling colour combinations and keep them on a board or in a small box. A real sample in someone's hand sells better than any photo, and it doubles as your stall display.

Where STLmint fits

STLmint does the design step for you. Pick a design, type the customer's text, check the picture and download a print-ready file. With the Seller plan, there is no limit on files and you can turn a whole list of names into files in one go. That leaves you free to spend your time on the parts only you can do: finding customers and printing well.
