3D printed desk name plates for offices: a seller's guide
Offices order name plates in batches when teams move, grow or hire. How to find office buyers, quote a team order and deliver a matching set.
A desk name plate is one of the easiest products to sell to a business. Every office has desks, people move between them, and new people join every month. When a team moves floors, opens a new office or rebrands, someone needs twenty or fifty name plates at once, all matching.
For a small 3D printing business, that's a bulk order with repeat potential. Here's how to win and deliver one.
Who buys office name plates
- Office managers and operations teams, when people move or join.
- Coworking spaces, for dedicated desks and private offices.
- Clinics, salons and studios, for reception desks and treatment rooms.
- Schools, for staff desks and Teachers' Day gifts.
- HR teams, as a welcome gift in new-starter packs.
Single buyers matter too. A desk name plate is a popular gift for a new job, a promotion or a retirement.
Which design to offer
Keep the range small so every plate in an office matches:
- The desk name plate stands the name up in large, bold letters. It reads from across a room and suits open-plan desks. Choose a lettering style to match the company's look.
- The sign plate takes up to three lines: name, job title and team, for example. It suits doors, reception desks and meeting rooms, with optional screw holes for wall mounting.
- Phone rests and card holders with a name make practical welcome gifts. See desk accessories.
The offices and coworking ideas page has these with example text.
Fix the format before collecting names
Agree the format with the buyer once, and apply it to everyone:
- First name only, or full name? First names fit larger and read better.
- Capitals or mixed case? Capitals look formal; mixed case looks friendly.
- Job titles? If yes, decide on a standard ("Head of Sales", not "Sales Head" for one and "Sales Director" for another). The buyer should check titles, not you.
- Colours. Usually the company's colours, or a neutral pair like white on black.
Print one sample in the agreed format and get it signed off before the rest.
Collect names as one list
Ask the office manager for a single list, one name per line, exactly as printed. A spreadsheet column pasted into a message is ideal. Don't accept names from each employee separately; spellings and formats will drift.
With the STLmint Seller plan, open the design with the agreed lettering and colours, choose Bulk order and paste the list. You get a ZIP of print-ready files, one per name, numbered in list order. Up to sixty names fit in one list; split bigger offices by floor or team.
Send a proof of the extremes
Before printing the whole set, send pictures of:
- the longest name, so the buyer sees how much it shrinks,
- the shortest name, to show the spacing, and
- any name with a hyphen, apostrophe or accent.
If the longest name looks too small, offer first names only or a wider design. See how to avoid misspelled names for the full approval process.
Quote the order
Offices want one number and an invoice. Give a short table:
| Quantity | Price per plate |
|---|---|
| 10 to 24 | your price |
| 25 to 49 | lower |
| 50+ | lowest |
Add a minimum order, a delivery date and what happens with late additions (usually: added to the next batch at the single price). Our pricing guide explains how to work out the per-piece price.
Print and pack for handing out
- Print in full beds, in list order.
- Check every plate against the list as it comes off.
- Pack by team or floor, labelled, so the office manager can hand them out in minutes.
The office manager is your real customer. If their afternoon is easy, they will call you for the next new starter.
Keep the files for new starters
Offices keep hiring. Write the design, lettering, colours and any size changes into your notes for that client, so the next plate matches the set exactly. When the office messages "one more for our new hire", you can open the same design, type the new name and turn it round in minutes.
Finding your first office buyer
- Start with people you know: friends who manage an office, your own workplace, local coworking spaces.
- Leave a sample with your contact details at a coworking reception.
- Post a finished office set on LinkedIn as well as Instagram. That's where office managers are.
Common questions
What size is a desk name plate? Sized for a desk, readable from a few metres away. Letter size, letter depth and the size of the stand can all be adjusted under All options.
Can I add a company logo? The templates take text and built-in icons, not uploaded logos. Use the company name on a second line, in the company's colours.
How long does a 50-plate order take? It depends on your printer and how many fit on a bed. Time one full bed, then multiply. Quote a delivery date with a few days of slack.
